Question 1 : How clean and safe is the water we get from our public tap for drinking?
ANSWER : The movement of sewage from septic tanks and latrines deep inside the ground will certainly contaminate underground water near to septic tanks and latrines before the water gets to the tap for consumption. Public tap would have been a good source of clean water if there is no septic tanks and/or latrine around the underground water source.
Question 2 : My family do filter our water by inserting filter papers inside a funnel, and passing the water through the funnel before drinking. How safe is this water?
ANSWER : The purpose of water Filtration is to remove dirt and impurities from water before usage. Filtered water may look clean when viewed with naked eyes but if you view the water with a microscope, you will never advise anyone love to drink such. In a nutshell, water filtration does not disinfect water, it does not sterilize water and it does kill germs and harmful microbes in the water.
Question 3 : In the community where I come from, over the years, we wash, bath and fetch water from same river for cooking and drinking. How safe is that?
ANSWER : You and all the community members who depended on this river were taking risks with your life because dirty rivers and streams are the major habitat of over two hundred known water-borne diseases that are harmful to man.
Question 4 : Sometimes we do have strange sickness after drinking the water from our village river. What could be the cause of this sickness?

Question 5 : Most times we drink water from sachet water called "pure water" and also bottled water. How safe is it for drinking?
ANSWER : Sachet water would have been a solution to clean water but considering the carelessness of the sachet water vendors, it is risky to trust them. Secondly, the test conducted on various samples of sachet water and bottled water collected from various locations, proved that bacteria still exist in these water sources. The infected water, if sterilized, will be good for drinking. But in a situation where sachet water vendors are mostly interested in their profit, they worker always neglect required hygiene needed for such consumable product
Question 6 : Sterilize water? What does that mean?

ANSWER : The dangers are numerous! Water-borne diseases can kill a healthy person, hence the reason it is wise to drink only sterilized water.
Question 8 : We do put some chemicals named "Alum" into water gotten from the river before drinking and we are still alive. How safe is that?
ANSWER : Alum was introduced in the olden days when humans have no solution for dirty water. In those days, colored water like red-flood is preserved for domestic used. If you drop alum into this water, the physical reaction between alum and every impurity in the water will lead to sedimentation. (i.e. all the dust and particles in that water will settle at the bottom of the containing vessel, and the water will relatively look like water) but not safe for drinking because alum simply enhances sedimentation of sands and muds in any water source but it does not kill bacteria and other harmful germs in a dirty water.
Question 9 : I use special filters other than filter papers and it gives me good drinking water for my family.
ANSWER : Filters and/or semi-permeable membranes can improve the taste of water by removing impurities like dust, color, order and chemicals but filters have no independent ability to kill or remove pathogens from water. These pathogens are the causative organism of most illnesses that gradually reduce human life span to 60-70yrs. If you can afford to drink clean and sterilized water for the rest of your life, you will live longer than your ancestors.
Question 10 : There are times we distilled the water before drinking. How safe is distilled water?
ANSWER : Distilled water or boiled water is good for cooking and bathing purposes only, and not for drinking because boiled or distilled water will reduce intake of calcium, phosphorus and other vital elements necessary for the maintenance and healthy life of your bones.
Question 11 : Okay! What about water gotten by using the reverse osmosis system before drinking. How safe is the?
ANSWER : Reverse osmosis is a water treatment method used by industries, for purification of water needed for manufacturing purposes. For example, an ice-block industry managed by a chemist will prefer reverse osmosis for the treatment of their raw material which is water. Why would they treat their water before freezing? Well, scientifically we came to understand that a clean water will freeze into ice once the temperature of that water becomes zero~degree~centigrade. To freeze water to ice, you must need electrical energy to power your freezers, and you would not want to waste your electrical bill freezing water that will take a very long time to freeze simply because it contains salt and other water soluble elements with varying freezing point, instead you will ask an expert to give you a solution so you can make profit from your business. The solution would be REVERSE OSMOSIS method, DISTILLATION method or and other suitable water treatment method. Reverse Osmosis is not an approved method of water treatment required for drinking because it does not kill water-borne diseases.
